Biography

Ian Thornton-Trump CD is an ITIL certified IT professional with 30 years of experience in IT security and information technology.

From 1989 to 1992, Ian served with the Canadian Forces (CF), Military Intelligence Branch; in 2002, he joined the CF Military Police Reserves and retired as a Public Affairs Officer in 2013.

After a year with the RCMP as a Criminal Intelligence Analyst, Ian worked as a cyber security analyst/consultant for multi-national insurance, banking, and regional health care verticals.

With a deep background in cyber threat intelligence Ian was previously the CISO for Cyjax Ltd., a UK based threat intelligence provider to enterprise customers.

As a CISO at Inversion6 Ian’s role is to spearhead the efforts to duplicate the success of Inversion6 USA by offering fractional CISO and advanced cyber security solutions in the UK and EU markets.

Ian has deep experience with the threats facing small, medium and enterprise businesses.

His research and experience have made him a sought-after cyber security consultant specialising in building security operations providing services as a vCISO, and sharing his passion for building effective threat intelligence programs for small, medium, and enterprise organisations.

Drawing on his Defence Public Affairs Course (DPAC) when employed as a Canadian Brigade Group Public Affairs Officer Ian Thornton-Trump CD also brings years of cyber security mentorship, leadership as the CISO at Inversion6. Ian will present a workshop on effective cyber security communications. This workshop is geared to anyone who must explain complex cyber security events to customers, internal stakeholders, executive leadership, and technical team members. This hands-on workshop will be scenario driven and based upon real-life incidents.

Fundamentally, the ability to communicate with precision, brevity, and clarity during incident response, when preparing a threat intelligence report, or just summarizing a customer interaction concisely, enhances your cyber security effectiveness. During this workshop, real life scenarios will be presented, and participants will be invited to write short summaries for different audiences using different techniques.

Participants will learn:
– The “bottom line up front” BLUF writing technique
– How to simplify & visualize complex information
– The importance of using “analyst language”
– Effective techniques for crisis communications
– Communications to vendor, supply chain and customers
– Media awareness techniques to stay on message

Ian will go in depth and present a combination of leadership and communication techniques to survive unpleasant cyber security events, prepare cyber security information for different audiences and introduce a new form of analysis writing (better than journalism or academic styles) called Bottom Line Up Front, or BLUF. Cyber security communications within an organisation or with external customers requires a deep understanding of the business culture and clarity, whilst providing information in an easily consumable form. As background Ian has had the role and training as a Public Affairs Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces and has a peer reviewed journal paper called “8 Principles of Cyber Security Leadership” which he will provide to all attendees.
