Biography

Professor Sony Kapoor is an influential macroeconomist, finance expert, geopolitics adviser and sustainability specialist with a long track-record of successfully tackling policy, geopolitical, business, technological and societal challenges globally and in Europe. His career spans banking, asset management, policymaking, strategy consulting, policy research, political advisory, the startup ecosystem, board work and civil society across dozens of countries in five continents.

Currently, he is the interdisciplinary Professor of Geoeconomics/Geopolitics, Climate, and Finance at the European University Institute in Italy, Chairman of the World Benchmarking Alliance in the Netherlands, CEO of the Nordic Institute for Finance, Technology and Sustainability in Norway, a Senior Fellow in Macroeconomics and Finance at E3G in London, Chair of Re-Define and a Trustee of Friends of Europe in Belgium.

Mr Kapoor also sits on several expert committees, advisory boards and boards of non-profits and technology startups and has been an adviser to six G-20 governments, the EU, the UN, IMF, World Bank, many EU governments and large institutional investors and MNCs.

His leadership in tackling the euro crisis, promoting financial reform, driving action on climate change, and improving development policy led to recognition as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, and as a European Young Leader by Friends of Europe.

He has been inducted as a Fellow by the RSA, and was awarded an honorary fellowship by the Open Society Foundations for helping diffuse the euro crisis, promote tax justice, harness new technology for society and green finance. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Public Discourse by the College Historical Society at Trinity College.

Sony is well-known for his charismatic & agenda-setting keynotes, influential policy reports & incisive media commentary. He has been invited to write for publications including The Economist, Financial Times, WSJ, Bloomberg, Les Echoes, SZ, Washington Post, NRC and Aftenposten and is often asked to be an on-camera expert by the BBC, France 24, Bloomberg TV.

Nowadays, he is often asked to advise corporate boards, supervisory boards, government cabinets and investment committees on the state and direction of Geopolitics and Geoeconomics.

Mr Kapoor studied engineering at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology as a National Talent Scholar, MBA Faculty of Management Studies as a Far Eastern Economic Review Scholar, and finance at LSE as a Chevening Scholar.
