Biography

John retired as a B777 Training Captain with British Airways in December 2022 having started his aviation career over 46 years earlier, straight from school as a junior clerk. After several ground based positions, he gained his commercial pilot’s licence in 1987 and went to fly for a charter airline, Dan Air.

Two years later John returned to BA and flew the original B747 ‘Classic’ for nine years. Concorde was John’s ultimate ambition and that dream eventually came true in 1998, when he became one of only 134 pilots to fly the world’s only supersonic airliner. When Concorde was grounded in 2000, John became a training captain on the short haul Airbus fleet and then transferred back to the global operation as a training captain on the
B777 in 2007 for the last fifteen years of his ‘privileged career.’

John’s bestselling and highly acclaimed memoir, ‘Life of A Concorde Pilot – From The Orphanage to The Edge of Space,’ takes the reader on an inspirational, moving and amusing journey through his life and concentrating on the pinnacle of his career as a Concorde Pilot.

What clients say about John Tye

"I have heard John talk on many occasions while I was chairman of Brooklands Museum and twice in the last year, most recently to the Cobham Heritage Trust where he attracted over 125 local residents. Whilst we often get the odd favourable comment about our speakers, after John’s talk we must have had between a dozen and two dozen people come forward to congratulate us on our choice of speaker, on how interesting he was, his delightful nature and all round what a human person he was. His photos and video clips were all displayed with great professionalism. He has set the bar really high for our speakers for the rest of this year. I strongly recommend him. With best wishes." Sir Gerald, Chairman, Cobham Heritage Trust
"John came to West London Aero Club to give us a talk about his lifetime experiences. He gave an excellent talk. He was articulate, his slides were brilliant and the audience loved it. John’s story is inspirational, as he overcame childhood difficulties and later medical challenges. None of this defeated him and he ended his distinguished flying career flying Concorde. His message was ‘You can do it’. I recommend John highly as an entertaining and inspirational speaker." Lecture Organiser, West London Aero Club
"I am the Secretary for the Loughborough Branch of The Royal Aeronautical Society. The Branch holds a number of lectures over the year, using a modern lecture room on the Loughborough University campus. We were lucky enough to be able to get John Tye to give the first lecture of our 25/26 season. His lecture ‘Flying Concorde’ was excellent. He not only provided an insight into the technical side of flying Concorde but also gave an overview of his background in aviation. John’s route to become a pilot was against the odds. The latter aspect was particularly inspirational to the young students attending the lecture. This was confirmed by comments the students made at a book signing John did after the lecture. John spoke clearly, with humour and used an effective PowerPoint presentation with video clips to good advantage. The feedback from the members attending the lecture was very positive. Hence I have no hesitation in recommending John Tye as a speaker." Secretary, Royal Aeronautical Society Loughborough Branch
