Herbert Diess is one of the most renowned German-speaking top managers. He is the former CEO of Volkswagen AG and former Chairman of the Supervisory Boards of Škoda Auto, Seat and Audi. He has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Infineon since February 2023.
Herbert Diess (*1958) studied automotive engineering at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and general mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich. From 1984 to 1989, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at the Technical University of Munich, where he became head of the assembly automation department in 1988. He obtained his doctorate in engineering in 1987 and subsequently worked for Bosch, most recently as Technical Director of the Treto plant in Spain. In 1996 he joined BMW, where he held various management positions over the following years. Among other things, he headed the plants in Birmingham and Oxford and took over the management of the BMW Motorrad business segment. From 2007 to 2014, Herbert Diess was a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG with responsibility for Purchasing, Supplier Network and Development.
In 2015, Austrian Herbert Diess moved to Volkswagen AG, where he took over the newly created Board of Management department as Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. Among other things, Diess promoted the production of lithium-ion battery cells and the development of the electric car at Volkswagen. From 2018 to 2022, Herbert Diess was Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. The following year, he became Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Infineon Technologies AG, where he had already served from 2015 to 2020. His latest project is the development of a solar factory in Germany and the comeback of the solar industry in Europe.
