Biography

Derek Brower is the New York-based US Political News Editor of the Financial Times, and is responsible for the paper’s 2024 campaign coverage, its reporting on the US economy, including the Federal Reserve, and all other political coverage from the FT’s Washington bureau and network across the country. He is also responsible for the FT’s national security, defence, and foreign policy coverage in the US.

Brower has reported extensively from around the world, including from conflict zones. He reported for the FT from Ukraine following Russia’s invasion in 2022.

Brower was formerly the FT’s US Energy Editor. He is an expert on US politics; global geopolitics; Russia and the Former Soviet Union; Saudi Arabia and Opec; American energy; and the energy transition.

Brower has lived in Russia, the UK, Canada and the US. He reported from across the Middle East and North Africa during the Arab Uprisings for the Economist. Before joining the Financial Times, Brower was a director of RS Energy Group, where he advised hedge funds and other institutional investors on geopolitics and US energy.

Brower began his career on Bridge newswire (now Reuters) and has written for an array of magazines and newspapers. Brower holds a PhD in Russian Literature from University of London and Modern History from Oxford University.
