Biography

Dr. Yueng Yue-man received his Masters of Art from Western Ontario and received his PhD from Chicago U. With basic training in geography in Hong Kong, Canada and the United States, Prof. Yeung has had a rich and varied career that has spanned teaching, research, international development and university administration. He had been away from Hong Kong for almost two decades, studying in North America and working in Singapore and Canada, before being appointed Chair Professor of Geography at this University in 1984. Prof. Yeung has travelled to most countries in the Asia-Pacific region and has worked with many Asian research institutes and researchers.

 

His research interests lie mainly in Asian cities, low-cost housing and policy studies and design for development, with particular reference to Pacific Asia. He has published numerous books and articles in international learned journals on these subjects. Apart from being the Director of the Institute, Prof. Yeung leads the Urban and Regional Development in Pacific Asia Research Programme. Prof. Yeung plays a very active role in serving the Hong Kong community through memberships in several public bodies providing key urban services, and he participates collaboratively in many regional and global research projects.

 

Besides serving for the above public institutes Dr. Yueng Yue-man also served in the government sector. He was the Chairman of Land and Building Advising Committee, overseeing the governance of Hong Kong’s scarce land issues. Moreover, he also served as Chairman, Pearl River Delta, Central Policy Unit to which he played an role in the issues surrounding this key strategic trading territory.
