Dr Stephen Briers is a practising clinical psychologist with many years experience in conducting individual therapy work with adults and children as well as systemic work with families. His caseload covers a wide variety of psychological problems ranging from school refusal, attachment issues and conduct disorder in children to depression, eating disorders and pain management in adults. He has a special interest in post-traumatic stress disorder and also conducts clinical work in the field of psychosexual health.
This extensive knowledge and expertise, combined with his enviable ability to translate complex ideas and theories into accessible forms for wider audiences, has made Dr Briers a popular media choice as an on-screen expert. He appeared in Freaky Eaters, a series on selective eating disorders for BBC Three and was a mediator in two series of the Channel 4 programme Wifeswap. Employed as a consultant and psychologist on four successful series of BBC parenting programmes including Little Angels and Teen Angels, he also presented Make Me a Grown up for Channel 4 and The Ten Demandments for Channel 5. BBC Radio 5 live also recognised his talent for easy communication, engaging him as resident psychologist on the Shelagh Fogarty Show.
Dr Briers writes regularly on his subject for a wide range of publications and is the author of several popular psychology books including a best-selling guide to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. His most recent publication, Psychobabble: Exploding the Myths of the Self-Help Generation, aims to call into question some of the more dubious science assumptions that underpin the thriving self-help industry. He is also much in demand for delivering training and seminars as well as public speaking engagements, including national conferences.
