Sachin Pilot became the youngest Member of Parliament in India when he was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha (Lower House) from Dausa Parliamentary constituency of Rajasthan in May 2004. He was just 26. He has served as a Member of the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Home Affairs, Consultative Committee in the Ministry of Civil Aviation and also Budget Estimates Committee of Parliament.
In May 2009, he was re-elected and became Minister of State for India’s Ministry of Communications and Technology and in 2012 the Minister of State of Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
As an elected MP and Minister Pilot focused his energies on improving social and economic opportunities in India. He targeted job creation and improvement in the quality and quantity of health and education services. Among his concerns is bridging the technology gap between urban and rural areas, so that all of India can participate in and prosper from the country’s economic growth.
Chosen from Ajmer, Rajasthan, Pilot is one of a small group of young MPs with interest in both rural and urban India. While his constituency is predominantly rural, Pilot himself is a Management Graduate from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He gave up the idea of a corporate career to follow in his father’s footsteps, the late Rajesh Pilot, and become a politician.
Pilot is part of a group of young MPs making up the Citizens’ Alliance against Malnutrition. This alliance is calling for a major awareness campaign to address malnutrition amongst Indian children.
An officer of the reservist Territorial Army – maybe the first Indian Minister to be so – Pilot is broadly anticipated to have a long and illustrious career. In recognition of his professional accomplishments and commitment to society, Sachin Pilot was selected as one of the Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum in 2008.
Sachin Pilot is currently the President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee.
