Biography

Raghunath Anant Mashelkar is an Indian chemical engineer and a former Director General of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, a chain of 38 publicly funded industrial research and development institutions in India.

R A Mashelkar is extraordinarily multifaceted, in 1998, he received the J.R.D. Tata Corporate Leadership Award, an exclusive honour reserved for Indian Corporates.  In 1998, he was elected Fellow of Royal Society in London, an honour reserved for the world’s top scientists and only the third Indian to have had such an honour bestowed on him.

Mashelkar valiantly battled and renounced the wrong US licenses on turmeric and Basmati rice based on India’s traditional knowledge. But to US multinationals, he licensed patents based on modern knowledge of Indian Laboratories, pioneering the trend of reverse transfer technology.

He is a Director on boards of India’s leading companies, from Tata to Reliance. 36 global universities have bestowed honorary doctorates upon him. The Government’s trust in him is shown through the twelve high-powered Mashelkar Committees, many of them on contentious issues.

As its leader, Raghunath Anant Mashelkar transformed the CSIR, the world’s largest chain of research facilities, into one of the top ten achievements of Indian Science and Technology of the 20th Century.

In 2014, he was awarded Padma Vibhushan, 2nd highest civilian honour in India, by the President of India and the Star of Asia, from the former US President, George Bush (Senior).

If God were to grant one wish, Mashelkar says he would request one day on earth again in 2050 to see his dream come true – India as a leading advanced Nation.
