Biography

Peter York, author, broadcaster and journalist, he is a social commentator dealing with trends and tribes. He also runs his own management consultancy.

 

Peter was Style Editor of Harpers and Queen for ten years. The Sloane Ranger Handbook -which he co-authored with Ann Barr -was the UK’s biggest-selling trade book of the 1980s, and he has written six other books on social style/social change. He was the writer and presenter of Peter York’s 80s, a six part BBC series shown in 1996, with an accompanying BBC book. Peter was a member of the Channel 4 ‘Power Commission’ which nominated the 300 most powerful people in the UK in1 998, 1999 and 2000 appearing in The Channel 4 programme ‘The Power List. He is a columnist for The Independent, where he writes weekly, and his book ‘Cooler, Faster, More Expensive: The Return of the Sloane Ranger’, was published in October 2007. His documentary ‘The Rise and Fall of the Adman’ for the BBC was shown on BBC2 in June 2008. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of the Arts London.

 

As a management consultant Peter York developed during the 1980s a group of nine specialist business consultancies.In addition to a wide ranging commercial experience advising major corporates, Government Departments and institutions in many sectors, His specialism has been the commercial exploitation of cultural change and ‘brand rehabilitation’ -the redevelopment of brands and businesses that have lost positioning focus.

 

His experience of the financial services sector includes: investment bankshigh street retail banks; building societies; insurance businesses including pension specialists and health insurers.

 

He has considerable experience of ‘elite’ and up-market retailers and products and their branding communication strategies, from Dunhill to Waterford and including Harpers & Queen, World of Interiors, The Economist, The Financial Times, Jaeger, Tiffany, Mont Blanc, Liberty and private banker Coutts & Co. In the 1990s Peter chaired a Department of Trade and Industry Committee examining the future of leisure in the UK as part of the British overnment’s ‘Foresight’ initiative.

 

Peter York was also a member of the Britain Abroad Task Force to review the communication of the British ‘brand’ overseas. He is a Board Trustee of Arts & Business, one of The Prince’s Trust group and is on the Members’ Council of the Tate Gallery.He is also on the Advisory Committee of The Learning Skills Foundation.
