Biography

Jean-Paul Betbèze began his career as an academic and was Professor at the University of Franche-Comté, a Senior Lecturer at the Universities of Caen and Amiens and also a Lecturer at the University of Paris IX Dauphine.

From 1990 to 2003, he was Head of Economic and Financial Research at Crédit Lyonnais where he went on to become Head of Strategy. He joined Crédit Agricole S.A. in 2003 eventually taking on the role of Chief Economist.

Among the many distinguished positions he has held, he is a member of the Circle of Economists and advises the French government as part of the Economic Analysis Council. He is Chairman of UNICE’s Commission for Economic and Financial Affairs, the Political Economics Society and a member of the International Conference of Commercial Bank Economists.

He is currently director of SAS Betbèze Council. Since 2015, he is president of the “Cercle des épargnants”.

He has written many books and comments regularly on European economic affairs in the media where he has declared that the announced reduction of state expenditure for 2014 is “not enough”. He is also the author of a number of official reports including the Banque de France’s 2006 Report on late payment (December 2006) and several from the Prime Minister’s Economic Analysis Council, on topics such as strategy for SMEs and employment.
