Dr. Etienne is one of the world’s most eminent experts in AI ethics and social media interactions. Formerly serving as Meta’s Global Generative AI Ethics Lead, he supervised the ethical development of generative AI models and products across all the company’s platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp).
Dr Etienne is now leading a number of international research and business initiatives to promote more responsible use of AI. This includes Quintessence AI, a premier firm he has created to advise governments and large companies on AI strategy, AI regulation and the responsible deployment of AI systems. He is also the founder of the Paris Conference on AI and Digital Ethics, the world’s leading conference on the responsible use of AI and digital technologies which annually gathers the leading international experts in the domain from academia, industry, and international organisations.
As one of the five philosophers ever working for a GAFAM, he initiated Facebook/Meta’s research on AI ethics and introduced the discipline in France, through university courses at Sciences Po, HEC Pairs and ESCP Europe. He notably developed Computational philosophy, a new discipline he developed at Facebook AI Research to analyse online social behaviours, leading him to publish Meta’s first research on misinformation and social influence. His work is globally recognised and earned him visiting research positions at the universities of Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Columbia and Montréal, as well as at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Dr Etienne also gave dozens of talks at major business and governmental events, including The AI Summit 2021 (London), The World Summit AI (Amsterdam), ICT Spring (Luxembourg), the French Consultate and the French Chamber of Commerce (New York), Khaleej Times Artelligence (Dubai), 360 Campaign Asia (Singapore), LEAP and King Abdullah Financial District’s leadership conference (Riyadh) and Station F (Paris). He also delivered exclusive talks for major international companies, including BNP Paribas, LinkedIn or Meta, and advised top governmental institutions, such as the European Commission, the US FCC or the French National Committee on AI.
