Biography

Harald Welzer is one of Germany’s most distinguished critics of growth and one of the most consequent thought leaders of our times regarding the way into a desirable future. His bestselling books “Climate Wars: What People Will Be Killed For in the 21st Century” as well as “Selbst denken” (“Thinking for Ourselves”) introduced him to a wider public. The foundation “Futurzwei” which he established, gives new thought-provoking impulses as well as examples for a liveable future for our grandchildren’s generation.

Harald Welzer studied sociology, political sciences and literature at Hanover University where he also graduated and later habilitated in sociology respectively in social psychology. Since 2012 he is Professor for Transformation Design at the University of Flensburg.

As one of the thought leaders of the capitalism critical school he counts on the fact that few people are already enough to initiate change. Therefore the slogan of his foundation “Futurzwei” is: We will have done something. Welzer and his colleagues want to tell the story of exemplary projects which show the way into the future: ecological, social and non-profit oriented.

Harald Welzer is an eloquent speaker committed to a sustainable lifestyle of involvement. According to Harald Welzer, a future-oriented culture of life and economy will not emerge through scientific insights or moral please but through visions of a better, fairer and more sustainable lifestyle. “We need examples for the fact that waiver is not only necessary but can also be fun.” says Harald Welzer.
