Biography

Frederick earned his degree in Psychology at Tennessee Wesleyan College, USA. While in college, he worked on a part-time basis as a mental trainer for the college’s baseball and basketball teams. He did so well that the college awarded him with an ovation during the annual sports award night. Upon graduating in 1980, Frederick returned to Malaysia to serve the Sarawak Sports Council as a leading mental trainer for Sarawak athletes. This was a new field then and it took a great deal of effort to promote mental training and to convince and gain the trust of athletes. This was a key contributing factor in Sarawak emerging as the overall SUKMA (Malaysia Games) champion in 1990, 1992 and 1994.

The success of Sarawak attracted the interest from other states and in 1999, Fred was appointed as a Sports Psychologist by the Penang Sports Council. Proceeding from there, in 2001, Fred accepted the offer by the National Sports Council of Malaysia to be a Sport Psychologist to support elite Malaysian athletes. Fred has since supported Malaysia top elite athletes leading up to major competitions such as Athens Olympic 2004, Beijing Olympic 2008, SEA Games 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007; Asian Games 2002 and 2006; and the Commonwealth Games 2002 and 2006.

Athletes whom Fred has been working/worked with included badminton champions Dato’ Lee Chong Wei and Wong Mew Choo, ten pin bowler and former Asian Number 1 Shalin Zulkifli, Karate contenders Lim Lee Lee and Ku Jin Keat; bowler Esther Cheah and many more.

Among Fred’s most memorable achievements were to help Dato’ Lee Chong Wei to win Malaysia’s first silver medal in the Beijing Olympics 2008, and to help both the men’s and women’s Tenpin Bowling team to win the World and Asian Championship and Junior World Youth Championship and Asian Championship.

Apart from mental training, Fred organizes mental toughness and team building camps for most of the national athletes. He has also been invited to speak at several conferences including the Pre-World Congress Mental Training Academy in Örebro, Sweden and World Congress of Mental Training and Excellence in St. Petersburg, Russia where he presented a paper entitled “Mental Toughness working with Malaysian Elite Athletes”.
