Biography

Professor Chris Rapley CBE is Professor of Climate Science at University College London.

 

Chris Rapley is a Fellow of St Edmund’s College Cambridge, a member of the Academia Europea, a Distinguished Visiting Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Chairman of the London Climate Change Partnership. Until recently, he was the Chair of the European Space Agency’s Director General’s High Level Science Policy Committee.

 

His previous posts include Director of the Science Museum London, Director of the British Antarctic Survey, President of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, and Head of UCL’s Earth Observation satellite group. He was Chair of the International Planning Group for the International Polar Year 2007-8, a exercise by over 60 nations and an estimated 50,000 researchers to deepen our understanding of the role of the polar regions in the Earth system and climate change.

 

His current interests are in the role of climate scientists in society and the communication of climate science. He is Chair of the UCL Policy Commission on Communicating Climate Science.

 

In 2014 Chris Rapley and the British playwright Duncan Macmillan wrote the acclaimed play “2071”. The associated Book “2071 – The World We’ll Leave Our Grandchildren” is published by John Murray.
