Biography

Charles (The 9th Earl) Spencer is owner of Althorp, one of England’s premier historic houses, which has been his family’s home since 1508) and the author of seven nonfiction books, including four Sunday Times bestsellers – The White Ship (2020); Blenheim: Battle for Europe (shortlisted for History Book of the Year, National Book Awards 2005); Killers of the King (2014): and his No. 1 bestselling childhood memoir A Very Private School (2024).

Charles co-hosts the Rabbit Hole Detectives podcast alongside Dr Cat Jarman and the Reverend Richard Coles. He has also presented TV documentaries for the History Channel and has been interviewed in his capacity as an expert historian on several occasions by the BBC, most recently in the BBC4 three-part series ‘Charles I: Downfall of a King ’.

He was awarded an MA in Modern History from Magdalen College, Oxford University, before going on to work for the American TV network NBC News from 1986-1995, primarily as an on-air reporter for the Today Show.

He has been a global keynote speaker for several decades and is known for his gifts as a truly engaging storyteller, who brings the past vividly alive.
