Bill Burke is the founder of The Optimism Institute and Blue Sky podcast, both of which he created to inspire people with a brighter vision of the world. A seasoned media executive, Bill was CEO of The Weather Channel, launched Turner Classic Movies, and co-authored CNN founder Ted Turner’s bestseller Call Me Ted. As a lifelong optimist and former Harvard Advanced Leadership Fellow, Bill now speaks on leadership and embracing optimism to transform individuals, teams, and organizations.
Bill Burke founded The Optimism Institute in 2022 after an extensive media and sports career as an executive, writer, and producer. Also a former Harvard Advanced Leadership Fellow, Bill now speaks on leadership and embracing optimism to transform individuals, teams, and organizations.
Bill’s impressive career history saw him serve as CEO of The Weather Channel Companies after several years at Time Warner, where he was the founding general manager of Turner Classic Movies. At Turner Classic Movies, Bill embraced optimism and creativity to launch the network with a lean staff and limited subscribers. He inspired his team by celebrating every new milestone—installing a bell in the hallway that rang each time a cable operator added the channel and reading fan mail aloud to remind the team of the impact they were making.
Later, Bill became president of TBS Superstation at the age of 29, where he led a turnaround of a demoralized staff by fostering a more positive, fun, and optimistic workplace culture. During his years at Turner, Bill learned invaluable lessons from one of the all-time great entrepreneurs, CNN founder Ted Turner. As Bill often says, “Not all optimists are entrepreneurs, but every entrepreneur must be an optimist.” This gave Bill the unique opportunity to co-author Turner’s top-10 New York Times best-selling autobiography, Call Me Ted.
For fifteen years, Bill was the co-owner and chairman of the Portland Sea Dogs, the double-A Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Leading the team through the pandemic — when minor league baseball was completely shut down for a full season—tested his optimism as the business went 20 months without revenue. However, Bill ensured that all employees were retained and paid, and once the pandemic ended, morale was high, and the business thrived once again.
Also a writer, Bill co-wrote, produced, and directed Live Another Day, an award-winning feature-length documentary on the bailout of the U.S. auto industry.
As a lifelong optimist in his personal and professional life (he has to be—as a Detroit Lions fan), Bill launched The Optimism Institute and the Blue Sky podcast to counteract the negative impact of news and social media on mental health. Through his podcast, Bill inspires listeners with an optimistic vision of the world and its future.
