Dr. Auma Obama is the founder and chairwoman of the Auma Obama Foundation Sauti Kuu, international keynote speaker, book author and guest lecturer on the topics of ecological and economic sustainability and social responsibility. The sister of the 44th US President Barack Obama would like to use her voice to give disadvantaged people a voice that is heard all over the world.
Dr. Obama was born and raised in Kenya. She studied in Germany, where she received a master’s degree from Heidelberg University. After completing this master’s degree, she completed her studies at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin and at the same time did her doctorate at the University of Bayreuth. Following her successful doctorate, she moved to England and worked there for a local youth welfare office, the Children’s Services Department. A move to Kenya followed, where Dr. Obama worked for the international aid organisation CARE for almost 5 years. Her tasks included the coordination of the “Sport for Social Change” program, an initiative from sport and education to strengthen the self-confidence of children and young people. A special focus was placed on girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Dr. Obama is chair of the Children and Youth Commission of the World Future Council (“World Future Council”) Councilor of the World Future Council. She is also a member of the organisational council of the Kilimanjaro Initiative, which supports young people at risk of crime to live their lives free of violence and to develop positively for themselves and their communities, as well as for several years on the board of trustees of the Reading Foundation and patron of the Storymoja reading festival in Nairobi.
Dr. Auma Obama is the founder and chair of the Auma Obama Foundation Sauti Kuu. Sauti Kuu comes from the Kiswahili language and means “strong voices” in English. The foundation wants to give disadvantaged children and young people a voice and awaken and strengthen their potential. This is done through practical training that is economically sustainable for the children and young people. The foundation is based on the principle of “helping people to help themselves” through support and motivation so that young generations can take their fate into their own hands and thus successfully manage their future.
