Biography

Lord Andrew Roberts is a professor, author and historian who has written extensively about British history, especially its role in the second world war.

As a leading historian, Andrew is a man of many talents and accomplishments, holding several prestigious positions at renowned institutions. He is a visiting professor at King’s College London’s Department of War Studies, the Bonnie and Tom McCloskey Distinguished Visiting Fellow, and a Lehrman Institute Distinguished Lecturer at the New York Historical Society. Additionally, he served as Cornell University’s first Merrill Family Visiting Professor of History.

Andrew has written extensively on military history and international affairs for both scholarly and general audiences. He has authored over 20 books and contributed to more than 30 publications. His works include The Last King of America (2021), the biographic Churchill (2018), Napoleon: A Life (2014), and the Sunday Times bestseller The Storm of War (2009). His most recent book, co-authored with General David Petraeus – ‘Conflict – The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine’ (2023). His books are translated into over 25 languages, including Japanese, Norwegian, Hebrew and Vietnamese.

His highly acclaimed books have received many awards and accolades, including The Los Angeles Times Biography Prize, James Stern Silver Pen Award for Non-Fiction, the Wolfson History Prize and the British Army Military Book Award. The books have also been shortlisted for the prestigious Duke of Westminster’s Gold Medal for Military History.

In addition to serving as the Cliveden Literary Festival’s founding president, Andrew is President of the History in Prisons Project. He’s a former Cambridge University Conservative Association President and Chair of the New York Historical Society’s Lehrman Institute Prize for Military History.

Andrew is one of the world’s leading historians and experts in the field. As a keynote speaker, he has addressed audiences including The British Academy, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, US Army War College. He’s also presented guest lectures at several universities, including Yale, Stanford, Oxford, Princeton and Cambridge. He delivered the 2007 White House lecture, and his insights are highly sought-after by audiences worldwide.

On 1 November 2022, he was created Baron Roberts of Belgravia, of Belgravia in the City of Westminster.

In October 2023 Andrew co-authored with General David Petraeus a book entitled Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare From 1945 to Gaza, which became a New York Times bestseller.
